The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) will host a Food Safety Modernization Act hazard analysis training seminar, Feb. 2-3, 2017, in conjunction with the International Production & Processing Expo in Atlanta.

During the seminar, a generic hazard analysis will be explained and a tool, that has yet to be released to the general AFIA membership, will be given to participants. AFIA’s foundation, the Institute for Feed Education & Research, contracted with the University of Minnesota’s Center for Food Safety and Animal Health to compile information on hazards for the feed, feed ingredient and pet food industry and create a hazard analysis as required by FSMA’s animal food final rule.

Identifying severity and probability of hazards

A tool was developed to aid in conducting a hazard analysis that is interactive for animal class, feed ingredient and hazard. “The tool developed by the University of Minnesota helps identify the severity and probability of hazards that could affect animal food facilities and will aid firms to mitigate their risks from these hazards,” said Richard Sellers, AFIA senior vice president of public policy and education.

2-day seminar on the hazard analysis tool

“This course provides that tool to AFIA members, giving them a leg up in the process. The training is hands-on, helping facilities take that knowledge and incorporate it in to their facility-specific hazard analysis.” The 2-day seminar is ideal for anyone working to develop a facility’s hazard analysis; however, it is for AFIA members only. Trainers will highlight the hazard analysis report and provide training for the tool.
