It is Friday again and time for All About Feed’s wrap up of the latest developments and business updates from the global animal feed industry.

DSM and Novozymes launch microbial muramidase

Balancius™ is the first and only microbial muramidase that works in the intestine to improve feed efficiency and increase sustainable product yield. The product, launched by DSM and Novozymes, breaks-down peptidoglycans (PGNs) in bacterial cell debris, thus unlocking the hidden potential in gastrointestinal functionality. Scientific data demonstrate the addition of Balancius to the diet of broiler chickens consistently improves feed conversion ratio by 4-6 points (3%), demonstrating a significant improvement in digestibility and feed efficiency. The launch of Balancius is the latest innovation from the Alliance of DSM with Novozymes, reflecting the strength of its scientific capabilities and ongoing leadership in animal nutrition and health. To date, Balancius is registered in LATAM (Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico), in the US and in APAC (Bangladesh, Pakistan and India). EMEA will follow soon (mid 2019), after a positive opinion published by EFSA EU in June this year.

New book: Selenium in poultry nutrition and health

More than 10 years after the release of his first book, Professor Peter Surai is pleased to announce the launch of his second book about selenium nutrition. This new book will provide new references to the poultry production industry. The official launch of the book will happen during the XVth European Poultry Conference that will be held in Dubrovnik (Croatia) in September. Selenium in poultry nutrition and health is a comprehensive guide providing up-to-date information about the role of selenium in poultry nutrition and health. This book is the result of extensive research conducted worldwide to further understand the implication of selenium in oxidative balance, immunity and quality of end-products. Recent research largely reported in this new book shows that organic selenium is further beneficial than mineral selenium to support physiologic functions. Adisseo is organising a social event at the XVth European Poultry Conference in September where Prof Peter Surai will introduce his book.

Calsporin® probiotic approved for fattening pigs

The probiotic Calsporin® (Bacillus subtilis C-3102, No. 4b1820 – gut flora stabiliser) has recently been approved by the European Commission for the use in feed for pigs for fattening. The product contains viable spores of Bacillus subtilis C-3102 and is with a content of 1.0 x 1010 cfu / gram highly concentrated. The natural shield of the spores support the Bacillus strain to survive high temperatures during feed processing. The probiotic is already approved in feed for all avian species (broilers, laying hens, turkeys and minor avian species), the complete porcine production chain (sow, suckling and weaned piglets, pigs for fattening) and pet / ornamental species (dogs, ornamental birds and fish). The product is manufactured in Japan by Asahi Calpis Wellness Co. Ltd, is being sold and marketed in Europe by Orffa.

Evonik to launch its own GAA, replacing CreAMINO®

Evonik has made the strategic decision to launch its own guanidinoacetic acid-product (GAA) used to enhance energy metabolism in livestock production. The market launch is planned as soon as possible and became necessary after Trostberg-based, AlzChem Group AG terminated its supply agreement with Evonik on 31 December 2018. The GAA product CreAMINO® currently distributed by Evonik is manufactured by AlzChem. Evonik will continue to supply its customers until at least the end of 2018. The termination of the contract with AlzChem AG will open options for Evonik to further develop the use of GAA in animal nutrition and to supply the global market with its own GAA product. Guanidinoacetic acid is an essential component for the organism in building creatine and it also serves as a key source of arginine. Creatine is vital for vertebrates as it contributes to ensuring that the muscle cells are supplied with energy. With the addition of GAA to animal feed, the feed conversion in livestock production can be improved.
