A number of Dutch feed companies and research institutes have started a consortium to increase the use of co-products and residues as feed materials.

Wageningen University and Research Centre (Wageningen UR) reports that the livestock sectors are very successful in converting large volumes of co-products and residues from the food and bio based industry into valuable and high quality animal protein. This process is part of a circular bio-economy.

New local sourcing strategies

To improve and stimulate the use of by-products in animal feed, a group of 13 Dutch feed companies and research institutes have teamed up and formed a consortium. The consortium will focus on developing new local sourcing strategies and to improve the European self-sufficiency of feed resources. Wageningen UR reports that one of the first activities in the collaboration is a study on the application and nutritional value of co-products from poultry slaughterhouses (“processed animal proteins”) in the diets of pigs. Also research has been started to extract phosphorus from plant-based co-products and to unlock proteins from grass and green leaves. The total project will last 4 years.

Companies in the consortium

The consortium consists of: ABZ Diervoeding, AgruniekRijnvallei Voer BV, Bonda’s veevoederbureau BV, Coppens Diervoeding, Darling Ingredients International Rendering and Specialties BV, EFPRA, Feed Design Lab, Noblesse Proteins, Nijsen/Granico BV, SARIA International GmbH, Schothorst Feed Research, Vitelia Voeders BV and Wageningen Livestock Research.
