The yearly 2015 survey results on mycotoxin prevalence from Biomin will be released in the coming months. Let’s quickly recap what the previous years (2010-2014) have shown in terms of contamination levels around the globe. It is obvious that every year, more samples have been tested and that the mycotoxin threats remain high.
In 2014, 6,844 samples were tested (more than in 2013), and over 26,200 analyses were conducted to test for the occurrence of the five mycotoxins most frequently found in agricultural commodities intended for animal production. It was shown that, DON poses the most frequent threat to livestock. Below you will see all the results.
The mycotoxin occurrence data for each region for the year 2014 is illustrated in the next figure as a percentage of all samples tested. The highest threat to livestock production due to mycotoxin contamination was observed in North America and South Europe. As in 2013, DON and FUM are once again the main threat and are found in over half of all samples tested worldwide.
In 2013, the Biomin survey covered 4,218 samples from over 50 countries around the globe. More than 16,300 analyses were conducted. The highest maximum concentration of all mycotoxins was 29,267 ppb DON in a Chinese barley sample. The highest average Afla concentration was observed in European samples.
In 2012, Biomin collected more than 4,000 samples worldwide and performed almost 14,500 analyses. The year 2012 was marked by drought in the US and an aflatoxin scandal in Europe. Compared with data from the previous year, an increase in the occurrence of fusariotoxins (ZEN, DON, FUM and ZEN) was observed together with a slight decrease in Afla.
In 2011, 4,327 samples were sourced between January 2011 and December 2011 from different countries worldwide. In total, 13,854 analyses were carried out. It was concluded that all survey samples tested positive for contamination with Afla (27%), ZON (40%), DON (59%), FUM (51%) and OTA (27%), respectively. See below the results.
Out of the more than 3,300 samples tested during the 12-months period of 2010 a striking 78% were positive for mycotoxin presence. If compared with data from the previous year 2009, an increase on the occurrence of the fusariotoxins ZON and DON can be detected.
