Norwegian fish feed supplier AkerBiomarine and Danish animal feed supplier Biomar, have recently signed a new five year contract, extending the collaboration between the two companies on delivering and purchasing Qrill feed ingredient.

The two companies started co-operating two years ago on the development of high-performance salmon feed containing krill. This co-operation has proved to be a considerable success and the parties have now extended and expanded their collaboration agreement.

Aker BioMarine has for many years worked on documenting the health, quality and growth effects of the Qrill product when used as an ingredient in fish feed. Several scientific papers have been published documenting anti-inflammatory effects, the redistribution of fat and high bio accessibility of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA/DHA when test animals are fed nutrients from krill. Aker BioMarine will continue to conduct basic research on the biological effects of krill components.

Worldwide, BioMar has launched growth-enhancing fish feed containing Qrill on a number of markets. In Norway these products are labelled Q for “Quick”. The name refers to the documented growth-boosting effect. “We will increase our focus on Quick with the aim of improving the profitability of our customers through increased fish growth. Qrill has been environmentally certified by the Marine Stewardship Council as one of just a handful of raw materials for use in fish feed and also has health and quality related effects,” says Hans Halle-Knudtzen, BioMar’s Director of Sales and Marketing.

“The BioMar Group is a world leader in terms of knowledge about fish nutrition and feed production. Combined with Aker BioMarine’s knowledge of ingredients, this collaboration will provide the basis for new value-enhancing feed types. We are proud of our partnership with BioMar and are totally dependent on working closely with the world’s leading technical expertise in order to exploit the potential offered by the Qrill products to the full,” says Halvard Muri, President and CEO of Aker BioMarine.
