01-02-2007 | |

Wheat stock in Canada totalled 22.289 million tons in 2006, down 6.9% from the 23.943 million in 2005, According to Statistics Canada.

Durum production showed a reduction in 2006 compared
to 2005. Wheat without durum was pegged at 17.821 million tons, an increase of
1.5% from 17.550 million last year. StatisticsCanada attributes the increase to
ample carry-in stocks and the bigger than expected 2006 harvest. Durum wheat
stocks were down 30.1% from a year ago at 6.393 million tons, again, on that
decrease in production.
Corn, for grain, fell 1.2% to 8.461 million tons but
remained above the five-year average of 8 million; 2005 ending stocks were a
record 8.568 million tons. Soybeans were a record 2.707 million tons, up 18.3%
from 2005’s then record of 2.3 million. The five-year average on bean stocks,
according to Stats Canada, is 2 million tons. Stats Canada states the increase
was due to a rise in harvested area and very good yields.

Feed
grain stocks
Feed grain stocks were also hit by smaller 2006
harvests. Barley stocks of 7.611 million tons were 21.2% lower than last year’s
9.660 million. Oats totalled 2.284 million tons, down 16.6% from 2005 2.738
million. Dry field pea stocks were 27.2% smaller at 1.561 million tons.
Stats
Canada reports that canola stocks were 11.1% lower at 6.712 million tons on a
drop in production. Flaxseed stocks grew 13.6% to 870,000 tons, just short of
the 1999 record of 875,000, following the larger than expected 2006
harvest.
