EU considers changing bio-fuel plans

14-01-2008 | |

The European Union considers lowering the bio fuel guideline because the side effects are more devastating than foreseen, said EU-commissioner Stavros Dimas.

The current EU goal is having 10% of the petrol
consisting of bio fuels by 2020. However, “it appears that the environmental
problems caused by the production of bio fuels and the social impacts are larger
than expected. We therefore need to be very careful”, according to Dimas.

He added that it is better to not
reach the planned 10% than causing massive damage to the poor people and the
environment.
The EU promises to make new
guidelines for the use of bio fuels.
