EU meeting on Syngenta GM maize ends in deadlock

16-11-2009 | |

EU ambassadors in talks last Friday failed to approve a genetically-modified maize made by Swiss firm Syngenta. The application will now be sent to EU ministers for a decision this week.

There was no qualitfied majority either in favour or against, so the decision is now up to the Council this week.

Animal feed importers are looking for approval of GMO maize type MIR604, which is crucial for the resumption of imports of soybean and soymeal needed in animal feeds.

Genetically modified food is a sensitive issue in many EU countries and has become a point of diplomatic tension.
