Europe source of contaminated pet food

23-02-2007 | |

The toxic chemical found in some Woolworths branded dry dog and cat food in South African stores originated from a supplier in Europe, according to the local manufacturer.

Woolworths withdrew
all the affected products
from its stores after traces of ethylene-glycol, a
type of coolant, were found in some of the pet food last
week.

Claims
According to the
manufacturer AquaNutro, the products are fully registered with the
Department of Agriculture and the company is a full member of the Pet
Food Industry Association of Southern Africa.
The
company said in late 2006 and early 2007, claims were made by dog owners and a
veterinary surgeon that some of its products allegedly caused renal or kidney
failure in dogs.

Identify the source
“By using our traceability system,
AquaNutro was able to identify the source ingredient that caused the
contamination. A specific batch of ingredient was then positively tested for the
presence of ethylene-glycol.
“The supplier of that specific ingredient was
immediately notified of the contaminated raw material and our company cancelled
all orders. The specific raw material originated in Europe, but was obtained
through a local supplier. New orders of that ingredient were placed directly
from a different supplier in Europe,” the company said.

Affected products
are Omega Premium, Platinum Maintenance, DogSense Adult, K9 Generations and
Export Product.
