Grain estimates for Italian grains rising

Italy’s statistics agency ISTAT has raised its estimate of 2006 domestic output of maize and wheat as it revised figures for planted areas and yields.

ISTAT’s estimate of maize output in Italy, Europe’s second-biggest producer
after France, increased to 10.338 million tonnes from a previous estimate of
10.127 million, according to data on the ISTAT website.

Maize area
increased to 1,126,813 hectares from a previously estimated 1,125,088 and
yields increased to 9.17 tonnes per hectare from 9.00 tonnes.

ISTAT
raised its estimate of 2006 soft wheat output to 3.124 million tonnes from an
earlier estimate of 3.086 million as estimated yields rose to 5.40 tonnes per
hectare from 5.34 tonnes but area edged down to 578,320 hectares from 578,408,
reports Reuters.

ISTAT slightly increased its estimate of durum wheat
output to 4.089 million tonnes from 4.087 million.
