JAS to seek assistance for poultry farmers

20-11-2006 | |

The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) will be approaching the Government to provide assistance for poultry farmers who are facing increased feed costs.

JAS President, Senator Norman Grant says
among other things, the Government will be asked to provide a buffer to feed
millers who import corn.Grant says the JAS will be raising the issue with Prime
Minister Portia Simpson Miller at a special meeting later this month.

High corn prices
Corn is the
main ingredient used in most types of animal feed. The price of corn reached a
10 year high this month due in part to an international shortage caused by
drought in some producing countries.
