The European Union (EU) has authorised Biomin’s multi-species, host-specific probiotic as a feed additive for fattening chickens.
The unique probiotic strains were isolated from the gut of healthy chickens, making them host-specific, safe and efficacious for use as a feed additive for poultry. The strains were selected from different parts of the chicken intestinal tract to ensure their reproduction and colonisation throughout most of the gut. The product promotes beneficial gut microflora in day-old chicks and birds of all ages, making them more resistant to pathogens.
The feed additive will be marketed in the EU under the umbrella of the PoultryStar brand. For the development of PoultryStar intensive research work, supported by the EU Commission, was carried out in Biomin laboratories and in collaboration with several universities and partners from the industry.
Says Michaela Mohnl, Director Competence Center Microbials, “Several feeding trials worldwide have already confirmed the efficacy of PoultryStar in alleviating a wide range of pathogenic conditions such as coccidiosis, necrotic enteritis, bacterial lameness and salmonellosis, in addition to improving performance parameters.”
PoultryStar was presented at two recent scientific conferences in Europe—the 18th World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress in France and the 19th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition in Germany.
