As part of its scientific and technical mission to promote betaine hydrochloride (a known supplement in animal nutrition for many decades), Orffa launches a global initiative called the Betaine Academy.

The Betaine Academy is a non-competitive platform for suppliers of betaine with the objective of making solid investments in a long-term research platform and to increase the knowledge of new applications. The objective is to create more awareness about all the ins and outs of betaine and to increase the total consumption of betaine worldwide in animal nutrition.

Currently, the main consumption of betaine is found in the broiler industry. Even in broiler nutrition betaine is still underutilised. A higher market penetration grade can be reached by replacement of choline/methionine for methyl group donation. Next to that, added value is expected in diets containing ionophoric coccidiostats and as such it may assist in the relief of coccidiosis related issues. In other animal species, betaine appears to be particularly promising for layers, swine, dairy and aquaculture.

The potential for betaine in animal nutrition is very big, but decent scientific and technical promotion of the opportunities ahead is required. “As a leading player with a strong scientific focus, we aim to take the lead in global promotion in an effort to offer solutions to the global animal nutrition industry. This can only be done with the support of the major producing companies, whom seem to be very enthusiastic so far,” according to Orffa.
