Russia bans EU slaughter waste, animal meal

Russia has expanded the ban for EU food products by also including slaughter waste, animal meal, fats and other products derived from beef, pigs and poultry, the country’s veterinary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor reports.

Up until now these products had not been included in the black list that Russia introduced as a reaction to EU sanctions over the Ukrainian border conflict. Spokesman Aleksej Aleksejenko said the decision was made in the interest of ‘safety procedures’.

Flemish Information Centre for Agri & Horticulture (VILT) quotes a representative of the Belgian slaughter industry, saying that the European meat industry is gradually finding other channels to still sell the pork products not sold to Russia, Southern America and Asia to name some.
