Denmark aims for leading role in bioenergy

10-07-2007 | |

University of Copenhagen is now focusing on bio-energy under the headline “Fuel for Life”.

According to Berlingske Tidende, the ambition is to bring Denmark in front
within sustainable bio-energy both in research, education and development of
biomass for energy.

The means are almost 50 researchers and
PhD.-students, two new educations starting on 1st of September and wide
cooperation with the industry such as Statoil, Dong Energy and Novozymes.

Testing at
Tåstrup

Recently the university held a press conference on the “Fuel
for Life” project in Tåstrup west of Copenhagen where Europe’s first sustainable
fields for production of biofuels, animal feed and produce are
located.

“We have spent 10,000 years on optimizing growth of crops for
food and animal feed, but now we can start using the part that we don’t eat for
energy,” says Professor Claus Felby from the Faculty of Life
Sciences.

Felby thinks that Denmark as a farming land is well suited to
be a pioneer within bio-energy. “Denmark has the potential to produce two to
four times more bio-energy than the EU requires,” he notices with regards to the
EU-decision that at least 10% of all fuel should come from bio-ethanol by the
year 2020.
