E. coli turns glycerol into ethanol

28-06-2007 | |

US-based Rice University says that it has identified a process that uses E. coli to convert glycerol into ethanol.

If commercialised, the process could be complimentary to bio-diesel
production where glycerol is one of the primary by-products.

Since
bio-diesel production began in the US, corn prices have doubled, but the
resulting surplus of glycerol has led to a price drop of around
90%.
