€175 million fine for animal feed cartel
A cartel of feed companies has been fined €175 million for fixing the price of animal feed phosphates for more than three decades.
The investigation, carried out by EU competition watchdogs, found 13 chemical producers have been setting the price of animal feed since 1969.
The investigation began in 2004 when two of the companies, Kemira and Yara, blew the whistle on the operation.
Belgian chemical producer Tessenderlo Chemie bore the brunt of the EU fines with an €83.7m bill.
Two French firms, Timab Industries and Compagnie Financiere de Participation Roullier, shared a €59.8m bill and Spanish firm Ercos was fined €14.85m.
All but one company settled the case with the Commission and therefore each received a 10% reduction of their fine.
