T. E. Ibberson Co., a well-known builder of feed mills and based in Hopkins, Minnesota, US, received an Eagle Award at the ABC 2006 National Excellence in Construction banquet.
The winning entry was the West Coast Expansion Project, a premium petfood
manufacturing facility for Nutro Products, Inc. in Victorville,
California, US.
This new $75-million facility was a replacement for an
aging plant. The project is a 35,500 m2 petfood manufacturing plant situated on
a 12 ha site in the Mojave Desert. The process design included two 6,800 tonnes
per month production lines for a total capacity of 13,600 tonnes per
month.
The massive project included 24,250 m3 of concrete and 1,800
tonnes of reinforcing steel placed in the tilt-up concrete ancillary buildings
and in the two slipform towers erected at the site — a 46 metres tall raw
ingredient and batching tower and a 27.5 metres tall finished product
tower.
The project had a total of 476,000 craft-hours. As the general
contractor, Ibberson self-performed 36% of the labour. The
remaining 63% of the craft hours were generated from the project subcontractors,
and 53% of those craft hours were by fellow ABC member
contractors.
Fast track
The expertise and
efficiencies of the team was evident when the originally projected schedule of
18 months was shaved to 16½ months, a full six weeks ahead of the
plan.
ACI Mechanical and Interstates Electric Company, TEI’s
subcontractor partners, were also honoured with national awards for this same
project.
