French feed companies hit by crisis

”The producers of animal feed are directly affected by the serious crisis that has hit the cattle farmers in our country. The financial position of the farmers has over the last few months worsened worryingly and feed producers notice a significant increase in the number of delayed payments.’’

That warning comes from the Syndicat national de l’Industrie de la Nutrition Animale, the organisation of animal feed producers in France, and the section animal feed of Coop de France. SNIA and Coop de France call for urgent help for farmers in financial difficulties. “That has to be done without any further delay because the situation could deteriorate rapidly.”

In the first 8 months of this year, SNIA-members have produced almost 13.2 million tonnes of animal feed, an increase of just 0.7% compared to the same period in 2014. The production of feed for cattle is almost 5% down on last year while pig feed is down almost 2%. On the other hand, poultry farmers needed more feed, showing an increase of almost 2%. Feed for poultry is the biggest segment in the French sector with an production of over 5.6 million tonnes in the first eight months of this year.
