More cows needed for new dairy quota

10-01-2008 | |

The European Commission’s proposed 2% rise in dairy quotas from this April forces to significantly increase the number of dairy cows in the EU.

On a EU level, 800,000 more cows would be needed. In
France for example already needs an extra 75,000 cows in order to produce up to
its current milk quota entitlements, according to French daily newspaper Le
Monde
. If the 2% quota increase gets approval, France will probably need
over 115,000 cows.
