New antifungus protein found in peanuts
A group of Chinese researchers have isolated a protein from peanuts that contains antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Trials with the protein named ‘hypotin’ showed
succesful results in fighting the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and the fungus
Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria alternata, Sclerotium rolfsii, Fusarium solani and
Fusarium oxysporum and Pythium aphanidermatum.

In addition, this novel protein
exhibited antiproliferative activity against tumor cells.
Hypotin has
potential to be used in agriculture and the food and pharmaceutical industry.
The Chinese team claims to be the first that isolated the protein. The research
from the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology at the Fuzhou University is
published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food
Chemistry.
