RASFF, which was developed to quickly exchange information on risks in food and animal feeds, received
8,582 recordings in 2010. This a record number and an increase of 8% compared to 2009.
In 576 cases it was reported of serious risks of products that were already on the market and which required direct actions. This number was alittle bit higher than in 2009.
Warnings
In almost 50% of all cases the warnings in the RASFF were on products that were halted at borders of an EU-member state due to possible risks for human helath.
In cases requiring direct action two-thirds of the products came from an EU-member state. Products were found when markets were checked. Risks were attributed to disease causing ingredients, heavy metals, allergens and mycotoxins.
