Russia to prohibit cultivation of GM-grain
The Russian Government’s Commission on Legislative Activities has recently approved a draft law which prohibits production and cultivation of grain and other plants containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), stated a report on the Government’s official website.
“The bill imposes a ban on the cultivation and breeding of genetically modified plants and animals in Russia, except for the use for expert use and scientific research,” said the statement.
According to the document, the government will be entitled to prohibit the import of GMO products into Russia, including feed and raw materials for feed production based on the results from monitoring the market. In addition, it also proposes the introduction of administrative responsibility for the production and use of GMO in Russia.
The official statement says the main goal is to “improve the state regulation of genetic engineering”. Russian authorities have opposed GMO products for a long time, Earlier, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia does not intend to bring GMO production into the domestic market.
At the same time, there are rumors that due to the lack of state control in Russia there a large number of grains which are grown using GMO technology. Experts say that these grains may be used for the production of compound feed production by the country’s largest agricultural holdings
