WTO investigates US farm subsidies

18-12-2007 | |

The World Trade Organisation is investigating multi-billion dollar US farm subsidies, after Brazil and Canada say they are breaking international trading rules.

The probe into support for wheat, corn, rice and other
crops follows the US Senate’s decision to pass a $US286 billion farm bill, which
the White House is threatening to veto.

The Canadian Government believes
the US has exceeded its WTO commitment to limit farm support to $US19.1 billion
a year. The US says it is disappointed at the move.
