Danisco and partners discuss feeding the world by 2050
Danisco Animal Nutrition, a subsidiary of DuPont Industrial Biosciences, and partners including Nutreco, Aviagen and Cobb-Vantress, will discuss at a PSA Meeting Symposium how the escalating demand for poultry meat can be met sustainably up to 2050 and beyond.
Speeches at the Symposium – which will be held on July 15 from 8:00-12:00 in the Nueces A room at the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel – will focus on underlying industry, environmental and scientific trends that could be exploited to increase the efficiency by which animals convert feed into protein, while also improving animal liveability. Topics covered and speakers include:
- Mega trends affecting the industry in the future – Dr. Leo den Hartog, Director R & D and Quality Affairs, Nutreco
- What role can science and technology play? – Dr. Charlotte Poulsen, Senior Staff Scientist, DuPont Industrial Biosciences

- From seed to feed – capturing grain’s potential – Dr. Jerry Weigel, Nutritionist
- Closing the gap between commercial performance and healthy potential – Dr. Christine Daugherty, Chief Technology Officer, Cobb-Vantress, Inc.
Dr. Janet Remus, Danisco Animal Nutrition’s Director Regional Research and Technical Services and Symposium chairwoman, commented, “Demand for poultry has quadrupled in the last 40 years and is expected to double again by 2050. Since the 1960s, broiler body weight at 42 days has increased by 66% and feed conversion has improved by 32%. If there were no challenges such as disease, drought, rising feed costs and variability of grain quality, then this level of growth should be sufficient to feed the world in 2050. Unfortunately, volatility – of markets, raw material costs and weather – is a fact of life for poultry producers. At the PSA Symposium, we will discuss how we can help them produce more protein in less time despite these challenges so that they can meet the needs of a growing population.”
