2nd draft “Animal feed safety system”

04-01-2007 | |

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued the second draft of the “Animal Feed Safety System” (AFSS). The AFSS is the FDA’s programme for animal feed aimed at protecting human and animal health by ensuring safe feeds.

The programme includes oversight of labelling, production, distribution, and
administration of all feed ingredients and mixed feeds at all stages of
manufacture, distribution, and use, whether at commercial or non-commercial
establishments.

The draft
document
defines feed as mixed feed as well as feed ingredients, as stated
in Appendix I. It covers the entire spectrum of Agency activities from
pre-approval of food additives and drugs for use in feed, to establishing limits
on feed contaminants, providing education and training and conducting
inspections and taking enforcement for ensuring compliance with Agency
regulations.
