ABN’s Sherburn mill is the first compound feed mill in the UK to be recommended by the British Standards Institute (BSI) for accreditation to BS OHAS 18001, the International Health & Safety Standard.
The mill is one of the UK’s largest producers of compound feed for pigs and
poultry at over 150,000 tonnes a year.
Alex Masih, ABN Supply Chain
Director, said “As part of our on going commitment to improving the Health and
Safety of our people, visitors and contractors, ABN set itself the ambitious
target of gaining this accreditation for all its 9 mills. We know that major
retailers and food manufacturers look favourably on suppliers achieving OHAS
18001accreditation. This is another clear indication of ABN’s commitment to
ensuring we meet the needs of the wider food industry, having previously
achieved BS 14001 for environmental management at all our mills.”
To
achieve OHAS 18001, the mill had to satisfy a number of exacting criteria,
including [planning for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control;
training, awareness and competence; emergency preparedness and response;
performance measuring, monitoring and improvement].
Mr Masih added: “The
Sherburn team had spent ten months working towards achieving this accreditation
by BSI, which is a clear indication of their effort, thoroughness and commitment
to their colleagues, customers and suppliers.”
