Adisseo secures sulphur supply

French nutritional feed additives specialist Adisseo decided to secure its access to sulpur, one of its essential raw materials, by investing and running a terminal for import and remelt of solid sulphur in Bayonne together with Société Béarnaise de Gestion Industrielle (Sobegi).

To achieve this the terminal of IPBB (Installations Portuaires de Bayonne Blanc-Pignon) in Bayonne, will be converted into an import terminal and a solid sulphur processing and remelting plant.

After discussions with the local authorities, the agreement for operating the terminal was signed between Adisseo and Sobegi, the owner and developer of the plant.

The terminal will be situated in the harbour area of the city of Bayonne – located in the South of the Atlantic coast of France – and will benefit from a maritime access for standard sized sulphur vessels, as well as railroad connections towards the consumer plant of Adisseo based on the chemical platform of Les Roches de Condrieu (Isère department).

This terminal, with over 200,000 t/year of capacity, will start operations in October 2012. It will not only bring a long-term answer to the company’s sulphur supply issue, but will also represent an entrance gate for other sulphur users or manufacturers.

The Adisseo Group is the biggest French consumer of sulphur which is mainly used by the company for the synthesis of carbon disulfide, sulphuric acid and methionine.

Sobegi, a subsidiary of Total (60%) and Cofely GDF SUEZ (40%), is the administrator of the industrial platforms of Lacq and Mourenx, also including the IPBB terminal of Bayonne. The Total Group strongly supports this project.
