AFIA to focus on pet food trends and labelling at IPPE

At the first day of the currently held IPPE in Atlanta, Georgia, AFIA organised a pet food conference to update ingredient suppliers and other pet food experts on the latest trends and challenges. Key topics were pet food labelling and the associated legislations.

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) represents more than 30 pet food manufacturers and all major ingredient suppliers. The full day conference on January 27 kicked off with a presentation from Svetlana Uduslivaia from Euromonitor International, talking about the domestic and global industry trends. In the afternoon, updates were given by the FDA, AAFCO and CDC.

Richard Ten Eyck from the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) mentioned that there are still some challenges for pet food manufactures in the US. “Not all producers are aware of the different rules for pet food labelling in the different states. Changes might be small between states, but can be significant”, he said. Also some unawareness can be seen regarding the use of health claims for pet food and the use of undefined ingredients, Ten Eyck addresses. He gave insects as an example. “The use of insects in pet food is not that simple, as we do not always know what the insects ate, how they were grown and how they are disinfected before the are used in the pet food”.

The IPPE still runs until Thursday, January 29th. AllAboutFeed and its sister publications World Poultry and Pig Progress are present. Please feel free to visit our booth (A#415) for a free copy and online subscription of the magazine.
