Alltech opens new treatment plant in Serbia

Alltech has opened a state-of-the-art effluent treatment plant for its yeast facility in Serbia. The plant will incorporate a cogeneration unit which will produce heat and power for the facility. It is the first of its kind in the region to integrate both effluent treatment and power generation.

This treatment facility is a combination of both anaerobic and aerobic treatment plants, the new system will convert the biological waste into biogas which can then be used to generate electricity and contribute to the facilities gas and power requirements. This will result in the provision of 37% of its present requirements for natural gas and contribute to 34% of its electrical needs.

In addition to gas and electrical supply, the hot water generated from the cogeneration plant will be utilised to heat various processes in the facility and to heat the anaerobic reactor, which is maintained at 37OC for optimum efficiency. In July 2009, incentives were announced by the Serbian Government to encourage investment in renewable sources of energy. This will result in a very favourable price for power generated from renewable resources in comparison to power generated from oil or gas.

The plant which is located in Senta, was opened in 1981, and has the capacity to produce over 8,000 tonnes of yeast a year. It employs over 240 staff in the region and is the manufacturing facility for the company’s proprietary yeast products. Alltech also supplies speciality food grade yeast extracts for Advanced Yeast Technologies a newly formed joint venture with global trading company Mitsui and Japanese brewer Asahi Brewers.
