At least 5 parents of Chinese children who got sick from melamine contaminated milk powder have been arrested for one day when they were planning to hold a press conference last week.
After the arrest, the parents have been taken to a work
camp just outside Beijing. On Friday night the Chinese police released the
parents again, a day after detaining them.
The five were preparing to
speak to the media to call for better compensation and treatment for sick
children in China when they were detained Thursday evening in Beijing.
The parents
wanted to address the aftermath of the melamine scandal, which took place
early 2008. “The government said the medical care would be for free, but I
already had to pay 50,000 Yuan (over €5,000) for the treatment of my child”
according to one of the parents.
