Court allows animal fat in German feed

Following an opinion of the Administrative court in Münster, contract farmers in the area of Wagendorf in Germany are allowed to use animal fats in their feeds, WDR radio said. The farmers fatten animals on a contract basis for a Dutch feedmiller.

In Germany feeding of animal fats is forbidden, however not in the
surrounding European Union – member states.

The only restriction the
court made was that feed for calves may not contain tallow (and fats) obtained
from ruminants. Animal fats are substantially cheaper than milk
powders.

The plaintiffs hope that the European Court of Justice will
meddle with the restrictions in use of meat and bone meal in animal feeds and
create uniform regulations in Europe.
