Cuba imports DDGS again
Cuba is importing its first shipment of US distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) since December of 2005. A shipment of 8,000 metric tons was purchased by Alimport, Cuba’s sole trade entity.
“The United States requires all purchases by Cuba be paid for in advance of
shipment,” said Chris Corry, USGC senior director of international operations.
“The Council is pleased to see a US grain co-product making its way into this
market.” With its proximity to the US ports on the Gulf and expanding tourism
industry, Cuba has the potential to become a significant consumer of US grains.
USGC officers visited the island nation in January 2006 to foster
relationships with Alimport and identify areas where technical support is
needed, such as in formulating livestock rations and using
DDGS.
