De Heus Feed acquires feedmill of Agrifirm

16-03-2012 | |

Dutch privately owned feedmiller De Heus has purchased a feedmill from cooperative group Agrifirm in The Netherlands. The acquired plant in Maasbracht in the south-east of the country will substitute the De Heus’ plant in Den Bosch.

For Agrifirm the sale fits within its strategy to concentrate feed production at seven locations in The Netherlands. The sale has to be approved by the workers’ councils of both companies.

Until recently De Heus planned to build a new production site in Andel for producing broiler feed and concentrates as well as a premix factory. This plan won’t be executed anymore and ends insecurities about necessary permits. The existing plant in Andel will be closed in 2015 and production will be continued in the newly acquired plant in Maasbracht.

The closure of the mill in Den Bosch will now take place one-and-a-half year earlier than planned. Last November De Heus asked the city council permission to have the plant for two more years in operation after the previously set date of January 2013. The plant was already sold to the city council of which De Heus was renting the building.

In its long term strategy Agrifirm last year decided to close its production locations in Maasbracht and Utrecht and simultaneously invest in capacity increase of its remaining 7 plants as well as introducing a 4-shift working day. Ultimately sale of the redundant locations is more economic than demolition or leaving vacant.

Agrifirm workers at the plant in Maasbracht will be offered to keep their job at the site with the new owner and workers of the redundant De Heus plant in Den Bosch will be offered jobs in other plants of De Heus or Agrifirm.
