Dutch initiative for sustainable soy

Nevedi, Friesland Foods, Vion, Gebr. Van Beek Group and Storteboom Group teamed up to develop a programme for purchasing sustainable soy for the Dutch animal feed sector.

The aim is to buy 50,000 tonnes of sustainable soy (not coming from illegal
deforested areas in South America) in 2009 and to raise it to 150,000 tonnes in
2011. The participating companies want to give a signal to the South American
soy producers that there is a market for sustainable soy.

Producers of the sustainable soy
are carefully selected and come from different regions. The Dutch companies
agreed that no soy from Amazon areas that are deforested after 2006 will be
bought (the so-called Amazon Moratorium).
