European Commission authorizes import of GM-rapeseed

13-03-2009 | |

The European Commission Tuesday cleared imports into Europe for use in animal feed and human food of the genetically modified T45 rapeseed.

T45 rapeseed is grown in large quantities in Canada in particular.

This herbicide resistant type of rapeseed was developed by Bayer and has received a positive assessment of the Food Safety Authority.

Opinions among member states were divided, which could not reach a sufficient majority to accept or reject it, leaving the European Commission the right to decide.

This authorization to import and use in Europe is valid for a period of 10 years.

All food products containing more than 0.9% of T45 should be labelled as such in accordance with EU legislation in place since 2004.
