Explosion damages ADM grain elevator

12-11-2008 | |

A fire and explosion rocked an Archer Daniels Midland Co. export grain elevator in Destrehan early in the morning on Oct. 30, causing considerable structural damage but injuring no employees.

The grain elevator, which was built in the 1960s, is
the largest of four facilities operated by ADM in Louisiana with storage
capacity of 6,432,000 bus, according to the 2008 Grain & Milling
Annual
. The elevator handles corn, soybeans, soybean meal and wheat.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation by federal safety
officials. David Weintraub, director of external communications for ADM, said
the company was relieved nobody was injured. “We do not know the full extent of
the damage or when the facility will be fully operational, but we are working as
quickly as possible to assess the damage,” Mr. Weintraub said.
