Feed pellets donated to help US farmers

06-02-2007 | |

Coors Brewing Company will donate 1 million pounds of pellets to Operation Blizzard Benefit, a relief effort coordinated by the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, the state’s leading agricultural organization.

Operation Blizzard Benefit is alleviating the
difficulties suffered by ranchers and farmers as a result of the recent storms
by coordinating and distributing donations throughout the state.

200,000 animals
The pellets, a by-product of the
brewing process, consist of spent grain and are high in protein. Coors’
donation, which is enough to feed 200,000 cattle for one day, will be
distributed to farmers and ranchers by local chapters of the Colorado
Cattlemen’s Association, the Colorado Livestock Association and Colorado Farm
Bureau.

Unable to graze
Since late December, many ranchers and
farmers in Colorado have faced challenges in keeping their herds alive. As a
result of the recent storms, efforts to transport food to the ranches and to
reach cattle to feed them have been obstructed, and cattle have been unable to
graze in their natural habitat. The pellets, valued at approximately $75,000,
will help feed cattle well into spring. The first shipments of pellets left the
Coors Brewery today.
