Fire at Darling plant causes $3 million in damages

A fire at an animal feed manufacturing plant in Kansas City, Kan., caused as much as $3 million worth of damage, firefighters said Sunday.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the fire Saturday at Darling International started accidentally when a processing byproduct overheated, firefighters said.
 
The fire caused severe structural damage and destroyed equipment and all of the product inventory at the plant, they said.
 
The company reported $2.5 to $3 million worth of damage.
