The European Commission on Monday approved the genetically modified soybean A2704-12 for use in feed and food, and for import and processing.
The soybean has been given a positive safety assessment by the European Food
Safety Authority (EFSA) and has therefore been authorised.
Member States
voting in the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCoFCAH)
did not reach a qualified majority either for or against the authorisation, and
the dossier was then sent back to the Commission by the Council.
The
Commission’s authorisation of the soybean is now valid for ten years, and any
products produced from the soybean will be subject to the EU’s labelling and
traceability rules.
