IFFO gains certificate for responsible supply programme

The Corral factory, operated by Blumar, is located in the south of Chile. The CEO of Blumar, Gerardo Balbontin, recently received the factory’s certificate from IFFO’s Operations Director, Jorge Mora, to mark the special occasion.

This news adds strength to the figure quoted earlier in the year by IFFO that over 60% of the products produced by its members are now certified to its independent Global Standard for Responsible Supply for Fishmeal and Fish Oil.

Placed in a wider industry context, this represents a third of the world’s fishmeal and fish oil production. The RS standard ensures the responsible raw material sourcing, safe production and supply of marine ingredients used for agriculture, aquaculture and consumer products.

Andrew Jackson, Technical Director at IFFO said “This is an achievement not only for Blumar but the fishmeal and fish oil industry as a whole.

“Reaching the 100th certification mark is truly remarkable over a timescale of less than three years since IFFO launched the standard” says Jackson.

The International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organisation represents the fishmeal and fish oil industry worldwide. IFFO’s members reside in more than 30 countries, account for two-thirds of world production and 80% of fishmeal and fish oil traded worldwide.

Blumar Seafoods is a new Company created in 2011 by the merger of Itata and El Golfo, two leading companies in the Chilean seafood industry, a merge that was triggered by a complex fishing scenario in Chile and a growing salmon farming industry.
