Animal nutrition is the heart of the business of the Cooperative Gouessant in Lamballe in Brittany, France. High prices for raw materials directly affected business, but the cooperative was able to maintain its profitability.
In the feed sector, a slowdown in sales in pigs and broiler feeds has been
partially offset by the good results of other sectors, such as broiler breeders
(+ 30%), aquaculture sector and especially cattle feed (+ 36%). “Of the last 4
years we have doubled our production of cattle feed,” says director Jean-Yves
Cornec.
A growth “boost” was realised by the resumption in May 2007 of
Nutri Ouest in nearby Goven, a company selling cattle feed to a portfolio of
3,000 customers located in the West of Brittany, Pays de la Loire and Normandy.
In 2007 Le Gouessant achieved a turnover of 438 million euros and with
5.26 million euros net profit almost doubled compared to 2006 (2.68 million).
Officials insist that these good results should benefit the sectors
through various supports in the current production crisis and by a rebate made
to members of cooperatives based on the volume purchased from the cooperative: a
total of 1.117 million euros will be paid back.
