The number of US pigs has dropped to 65.4 million head in March. This is 3% less than the number in March last year.
Fattening pigs and piglets dropped to 59.4 million, breeding sows dropped 6 million animals.
This drop in pig numbers will mean that pig slaughterhouses will be offered 5% less pigs in the coming months. This equals 100,000 less animals per week. The price of US pork is therefore expected to rise from € 1.21 to € 1.48 per kilo.
