Major food players sign ‘green’ agreement

Danisco, Bunge, Nestlé, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and Tyson Foods have joined a working group that aims to “enable companies and stakeholders to better measure and communicate sustainability progress.

The working group has been established by the Global
Reporting Initiative (GRI), a body that promotes corporate environmental
sustainability. The group is set to meet in Brazil in early 2008 to develop
guidelines.

Meaningful information
The group says consumers are
demanding to be provided with meaningful information about how foods and
beverages are produced, and producers need to respond to those
demands.

“This cannot be reduced to a simplistic ‘carbon label,’ but
requires a sound understanding of all significant sustainability aspects,
including water, nutrition, and health and wellness as a basis to create shared
value for society,” said Nestlé’s safety, health and environment vice president
Claus Conzelmann.
