No grain crisis expected in Bulgaria

23-07-2007 | |

There will be no grain crisis in Bulgaria as the bread balance for 2007/08 has been secured, the country’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Svetla Bachvarova said.

The total amount of wheat yielded this year is
2,200,000 tons and this will secure the needs of the Bulgarian population. Still
the amount is not enough so that none of it could be exported.

Drought
The drought has destroyed around 185,000
decares of wheat this summer, Bachvarova added. Around 50% of the destroyed
crops were in the Pleven town region.

If the temperatures remain
extremely high in the next two weeks, the bigger part of the corn fields will
also be destroyed, Minister Bachvarova warned.
