Nordic Petfood to supply half Romania

Nordic Petfood in Romania, part in the Nordic Group, strives to supply half of the local market’s demand, within two years. The company will therefore invest €3 million in its factory in Buftea.

The price is the most important criterion buyers use to select pet food, the
company’s sales manager Constantin Muclea told the newspaper Ziarul
financiar
. The store chains that bring half of the company’s sales rely on
the low and average price segment only, the super premium products being on sale
only in pet shops and vet offices. The main problem the Buftea-based investment
has to face is that EU structural funds come too slowly, said Nordic Petfood’s
president and shareholder Sorin Pufan.

The company annually puts out
about 12,000 tones dry pet food, but its yearly production could reach 25,000 –
30,000 tones, after the project ends. The Group’s sales could reach €6 million
this year, by 37% higher than in 2007. The Group’s pet food division currently
numbers two companies, namely Nordic Petfood Production and Nordic Petfood
Distribution.

Company’s officials expect the market to grow by 7,000 –
10,000 tones a year, over 2006-2008. The Romanian pet food market could exceed
70,000 tones next year, than 50,000 tonnes in 2007, experts believe. The segment
was assessed at 40 million euros in 2007, Euromonitor market research company’s
data say.
