After a long illness, Josep Tarragó Colominas, who was the founder and CEO of IRTA from 1985 to 2008, has died in Barcelona at the age of 68.
Josep developed different activities in the private sector (U.S. Feed Grains Council, State Sugar Council of the Dominican Republic) and in academia (Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Agriculture School in Barcelona). He held various positions in the administration of IRTA (General Director and General Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries) and, since its creation in 1985, he was the CEO of IRTA up to the year 2008.
In 2009 the Catalan government awarded him the Creu de Sant Jordi in recognition of his work of modernisation of the Catalan primary sector and for his efforts to place IRTA at the highest international standards.
IRTA is a research institute owned by the Government of Catalonia and part of the Department of Agriculture.
