Review: The 40th Annual Liquid Feed Symposium

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) reports that the September 14-16, 2010 Liquid Feed Symposium, held in San Antonio, Texas, was a huge success.

The program line-up focused on Sustainability in the Face of Ongoing Challenges and speakers from industry, government and academia brought invaluable take-home information for those attending.

The symposium kicked off with a look at world weather patterns and the US weather forecast for fall and winter, an economic update from the Kansas City Federal Reserve, and regulatory updates from FDA’s perspective, followed by an industry/association perspective.

Presenters from academia took a look at the use of fats, sugars and carbohydrates in liquid supplementation and a sound scientific look at the positive impacts associated with liquid supplementation was followed by a beef consultant’s view of the pros and cons of dry vs. liquid feed supplementation.

Hall of Fame
On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, Dr. Findlay Pate, who had been on staff at the University of Florida before retiring, was posthumously inducted into the Liquid Feed Hall of Fame at the Lunch and Awards Ceremony and Leland McKinney of Kansas State University shared a message on the progress of the new KSU feed mill and biorefinery teaching and research facility.

Bruce Vincent, the well-known logger and motivational speaker, addressed the symposium attendees following an insightful presentation of a consumer of agricultural products perspective from Texas A & M student, Cassie Payne.
Dave Fischer of Foster Commodities presents the Liquid Feed Hall of fame Award to Terry Weaver of Westway Feed Products on behalf of Dr. Findlay Pate’s family

Rounding out this segment was an in-depth look at animal welfare, consumer perceptions, industry responsibilities and realities. The audience was riveted by the presentations and how they related to the feed industry today.

A forecast of the cattle market and an ingredient forecast, both critical to business planning, were part of the symposium’s closing presentations.

The Liquid Feed Symposium typically draws decision-makers from liquid feed manufacturing companies, ingredient suppliers and other support services to the liquid feed industry. The associated Liquid Feed Trade Show facilitates a unique networking environment for all attendees.
