US pet food recall moves towards one million bags

P&G over the weekend said it was voluntarily expanding an earlier recall to include a certain set of veterinary and specialized dry pet food products because they had "the potential" to be contaminated with salmonella.

 

The list announced over the weekend included all dry sizes and varieties of the company’s Iams Veterinary Dry Formulas and Eukanuba Naturally Wild with "best by" dates of July 1, 2010 to Dec. 1, 2011.

 

P&G said the affected products are sold in veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers and no canned food, biscuits, treats or supplements are affected.

 

Earlier in July, the company recalled two lots of its prescription renal dry cat food.

 

A spokesman said the estimate of 800,000 to 950,000 recalled bags, which covers both announcements, is an approximate one since the company sells many different package sizes.

 

The spokesman said that there haven’t been any confirmed cases of salmonella related to the products, and that P&G had recalled the products out of "an abundance of caution."

 

The company had become aware that there could potentially be a salmonella risk due to "a situation in the environment" of the plant, he said.
