EuroTier 2024 in All About Feed 8

The latest edition of All About Feed is now available online. We look at the work of experts who are developing a monitoring tool in feed factories to control particle sizes, and place microorganisms under the microscope to discover which bacterial species have a positive impact and which have a negative impact on pig feed efficiency. Also, which feed innovations were highlighted at EuroTier? This and more in this latest edition.

Particle size control helps pig stomach health

Fine particle size feed can impact many things in pigs, such as growth performance, welfare or mortality. A team of Danish experts have been working on developing a monitoring tool in feed factories to control particle sizes.

Good vs. bad bacteria in pig feed

Microorganisms such as bacteria present impact nutrient digestion and absorption, affecting pig feed efficiency. This article looks closely at which bacterial species have a positive impact and which have a negative impact.

Yeast supplementation in poultry and pig diets

Recent research has demonstrated the beneficial impact of yeast and yeast-based products in providing essential nutrients, increasing feed palatability, and improving growth performance and feed utilisation. What is the impact on pigs and poultry? All About Feed investigates.

New approaches to boosting the use of circular feed ingredients

Upcycling and evaluating ingredients with a new model SNAPIG (Simulating Nutrient digestion and Absorption kinetics in PIGs), which aims to help users predict the rate and extent of nutrient absorption from diets varying in ingredient composition and physicochemical properties, is a valuable approach that will help to boost the use of circular ingredients in animal diets.

EuroTier 2024 feed innovation award winners

EuroTier puts a spotlight on and awards innovations that stand out in the field. In this article, All About Feed highlights the 4 feed innovations that were awarded a silver medal, which were a blend of volatile fatty acids for cattle, a heavy-duty magnet for feed mixing systems, a system that determines the welfare of suckling calves at automatic feeders, and a feeding bucket lid equipped with a self-closing opening.

EU pet food industry: Steady growth despite rising inflation

The cost-of-living crisis in Europe has appeared to not have derailed the growth of the pet food market, but, a substantial growth in the private label segment shows that the financial side plays a role in shaping consumer behaviour.

Nutritional management of cows in the context of milking robots

An increasing number of dairy cows are being fed through robot milking systems, but a closer look at how these cows are given the 2 components of their diet is needed. The aim is to ensure that they each are given the nutrition they need for maximum performance.

An efficiency revolution for feed mills: the use of AI is growing

Software is playing an increasing role in the feed sector in both the operation of feed mills and in feed distribution. But with the arrival of new sensors and AI-level software, unprecedented operational efficiency is now being achieved at some mills.

Evaluating the search for new protein sources in aquafeeds

A variety of new feed ingredients are emerging in the aquaculture feed sector. In this recent study, researchers evaluated potential protein sources for future expansion of aquaculture worldwide.

Column: Sustainable pig production: nutrition is key

Jan Fledderus at Schothorst Feed Research says that pig nutrition plays a crucial role in the production of safe, sustainable, affordable and welfare-friendly meat. He notes that further improvements are possible with more data on the nutritional requirements of the animal, on the characteristics of feed ingredients and on the effects of feed processing.
